What Is the Myers-Briggs Assessment?

The Myers-Briggs assessment, also known as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), is a personality assessment designed to help people understand their preferences in how they communicate, process information, make decisions, and approach work. It identifies 16 personality types based on four pairs of preferences.

1. Extraversion or Introversion

The first dimension looks at how people tend to direct their energy and attention. Extraversion is generally associated with engaging with people and the external environment, while Introversion is associated with reflection and focusing more on the internal world.

This can help individuals understand their preferred working and communication environments.

2. Sensing or Intuition

The second dimension focuses on how people prefer to gather information. Sensing tends to focus on facts, details, practical information, and what can be observed. Intuition tends to focus on patterns, possibilities, ideas, and the bigger picture.

Understanding these preferences can help explain why people may approach the same information differently.

3. Thinking or Feeling

The third dimension looks at how people tend to make decisions. Thinking places greater emphasis on logic, consistency, and objective analysis. Feeling considers values, relationships, and the potential impact of decisions on people.

Neither preference is considered better. They simply represent different ways of approaching decisions.

4. Judging or Perceiving

The fourth dimension looks at how people prefer to approach their external environment. Judging tends to favour structure, planning, organisation, and making decisions. Perceiving tends to favour flexibility, exploration, and keeping options open.

This dimension can provide insights into how people approach deadlines, plans, and changing situations.

5. Identify Personality Preferences

The four preference pairs combine to create 16 possible personality types, such as INTJ, ENFP, ISFJ, and ESTP. The resulting type provides a framework for understanding an individual’s preferred ways of communicating, working, processing information, and making decisions.

The MBTI is commonly used in leadership development, team building, coaching, career development, and communication training. It can help individuals recognise their own preferences while understanding why colleagues may approach situations differently.

However, the Myers-Briggs assessment should not be treated as a fixed label. A personality type does not determine what someone can or cannot do. People can adapt their behaviour depending on their role, environment, experience, and situation.

When used appropriately, the MBTI can provide a useful starting point for self-awareness and conversations about how people work together. Its greatest value is not putting people into boxes, but helping individuals understand their preferences and recognise different ways of working.
